The Germans are discovering in clay what Portugal has always had
There are news stories that make us think not only about innovation, but also about missed opportunities. I recently read an article in a German magazine about a sustainable building project developed for the Landesgartenschau 2028 in Neustadt. At first glance it seemed like just another initiative linked to the reduction of carbon emissions in construction. But the more I read, the more I asked myself a simple question: why aren´t we doing this on a larger scale?
The project uses a new concrete formulation where part of the traditional components are replaced by clay-based materials, including by-products and materials that were previously considered waste. The result is concrete with a lower carbon footprint, lower energy consumption in its production and structural performance equivalent to that of conventional solutions.
The most curious thing is that the Germans are looking at a resource that Portugal has known for centuries.

Portugal built a significant part of its industrial and architectural identity around ceramics, bricks, tiles and ceramic tiles. We have some of the most competitive companies in Europe, export to dozens of markets and have technical knowledge accumulated over generations. In many regions of the country, clay is not just a raw material. It is part of the local economic history.
However, we continue to look at these resources almost exclusively through the traditional lens.
Meanwhile, the world is beginning to discover new uses for materials that have always been available.
And the reason is simple.
Construction is entering a profound transformation. For decades, the debate on sustainability has focused on the energy efficiency of buildings. There was talk of insulation, solar panels, energy certifications and reduction of consumption. All of this is still important, but the focus is now shifting to another problem: embodied carbon in building materials.
And here cement occupies a central place.
Cement production is among the industrial activities with the highest carbon dioxide emissions globally. As regulatory pressure mounts and investors demand more sustainable buildings, the demand for alternative materials and low-carbon solutions is growing rapidly.
It is precisely in this context that projects such as the German one gain relevance.
What surprises me is not that they are developing these solutions. What surprises me is that countries like Portugal, with a strong ceramic tradition, abundance of raw materials and consolidated industrial knowledge, are not at the forefront of this transformation.
Perhaps because we continue too often to look at our resources through the lens of the past.
The same clay that for decades was used to make bricks and tiles could play an important role in the decarbonization of European construction. And this is not just an environmental issue. It is an industrial, economic and strategic issue.
At a time when Portugal is looking for new areas of growth, new exports and greater added value for its economy, it may be worth looking at sectors that already exist and asking how they can evolve.
Because innovation doesn´t always come from creating something completely new.
It often arises when someone finds a new use for what has always been available. The Germans seem to have realized this.
Maybe it´s time for us to understand too.
Because while we discuss the future of construction, sustainability, and industry, we can be sitting on one of the raw materials that will help build that future.
And the irony would be enormous if other countries led this transformation using resources and knowledge that Portugal has had for generations.
